When Buying a Used Car
Buying a used car can be fun, exciting, and stressful all at the same time. The easiest way to reduce some of the stress of decision making is to be completely informed before you arrive at the dealership. Remember, this is usually a large investment, and a vehicle that you will have for several years. It is not a decision to be rushed. With the internet, comes the availability to shop around for your car without leaving your home. You can compare prices, look at options, and find the perfect car without walking through the pressure filled showroom. Decide what you need What features are essential for your family? Do you need 7 passenger seating? Will you be able to survive in a vehicle with no sunroof? Is gas mileage an issue for you. Make a list of everything you really want in your new vehicle. Then take a second look at that list to determine the features you cannot live without. Find Options Find the makes and models of the cars that offer all of the features that you need. (For instance, 7 passenger seating is offered in many SUVs and in minivans.) Use the internet to narrow down your search to the perfect type of vehicle. Find the Car Search through local listings online to find dealerships that offer your dream car. Compare prices and packages before you ever visit the dealership. Is this REALLY the Car? Get a Carfax report! Most online dealerships list the vehicle information right on their websites. If the vin number is available, check it out. Although Carfax does not always give a complete history, it is a much better indication of the life the vehicle has lived. Call the dealership and find out how they aquired the car. Be wary of cars purchased at auctions. The Test Drive Once you have settled on the perfect car, visit the dealership selling it. Take it for a test drive - right to your own mechanic. This is the best time to have everything checked over. Get a list of any mechanical issues that the vehicle may have. Buying the Vehicle When you are sure that this is the vehicle for you, decide what you are willing to pay for it. It is best to have the blue book value, available online at kbb.com, to help you decide what the car is really worth. Many dealerships list their lowest prices online, so some may not be willing to negotiate too much. Remember, this is usually a large investment, and a vehicle that you will have for several years. It is not a decision to be rushed.
