Recipe for Dinosaur Bones
This activity is one of my favorites when it comes to teaching children about Dinosaurs. And what child doesn't like dinosaurs? When explaining the process to your child, it is important to show how each ingredient or action mimicks the real events that would have had to happen to create real dinosaur bones. Ingredients Dinosaur Bones ~ Kitchen Sponges cut into Bone Shapes Ancient River Water ~ 3 cups water, 1/1/2 cups salt Ancient River Bed ~ Medium sized tub containing dry sand OR Ancient Desert Plain ` Dry countertop where bones will be undisturbed for 3-5 days Getting Ready Cut the sponges into bone shapes. I like to have one for each child so everyone has their own bone to check. Find a bowl large enough to hold the water, the sponge, and several small hands without spilling too much. Place the water and salt into the bowl. Making the Fossils Discuss what real dinosaur bones may have looked like. Would the T-Rex have sharp teeth? Give a bone shaped sponge to each child. Ask them to feel the bone. "Does this feel like a real dinosaur bone?" No - it's a Sponge!! Next show the Ancient River Water - The salt water in the bowl. What happened when the dinosaur bones were left in the mud on the ground for thousands of years? What will happen to our sponges if we leave them in an ancient river bed? Will ours take as long? Dip the sponges into the Ancient River Water and allow them to soak in the salt for 1-5 minutes. Once the Bones have been thouroughly soaked, they may be placed on a dry countertop Ancient Desert Plain or buried in a tub of dry sand Ancient River Bed. Dinosaur bones were formed years and years ago, so this will take quite a while. You can check the bones as they are forming, but they won't be ready on the first day. Have Fun!
