Make Your Own Dinosaur Fossil
Learning about Dinosaurs is very exciting to young children. Use this recipe for coffee grounds play dough to create your own fossils. When still moist, the dough will have a gritty, muddy feel to it. When it dries, it will begin to harden and turn a lighter color. The finished product is a brittle, rock-like form that will hold the shape of any impressions you make in it. Ingredients
1 cup used and dried coffee grounds
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1/2 cup cold coffee Making the Fossils
Once all of the ingredients are available, you can mix them all together. It will form a muddy paste. To avoid a mess, you can give a paper plate to each child to use as a platform for the dough. The dough can be formed into rock like shapes. At this point, children can begin to imprint shapes (shells, feathers, etc.) into it. I encouraged my own children to make an impression of their own hand. The dough may take several days to dry. As it dries, the color will start to lighten up. If some parts of the dough were pressed to thin, they may begin to crack.
Once the fossils are completely dry, they should be stored in a safe place. The dried product is fun to look at, but very fragile ~ Just like a real fossil!
